Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is a condition in which the lining of the uterus begins to grow into the muscular wall of the womb. It can be completely asymptomatic. Diagnosis is typically made through a pelvic ultrasound (preferably transvaginal) or magnetic resonance imaging, depending on the level of expertise.

Symptoms

1. Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
2. Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
3. Pelvic pain
4. ⁠Bloating and a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen
5. ⁠Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)

Treatments include:

1. Mirena, a hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device.
2. NSAIDs and tranexamic acid to manage pain and heavy bleeding during periods.
3. Hormonal treatments, such as progesterone-only pills or combined oral contraceptives.
4. Surgical management, which is the definitive treatment (hysterectomy, or removal of the womb).

It can be completely Asymptomatic.
